Exhibition of the Department of Digital Art, University of Applied Arts Vienna

OPENING EXHIBITION: 24 June 2009 // 7 p.m.
with a live performance by Robert Mathy, Katrin Stumreich, David Röder

Open: 25 June to 12 July 2009, daily from 10 am to 8 pm.
Location: Freiraum / quartier21, im MQ, Museumsplatz 1, A-1070 Vienna

Reality is constructed through references and representations. In computing a reference is called an alias. The alias was invented to use space more efficiently. Although an alias is limited in size it is capable of producing an impression of the original it is referring to. But an alias is also a kind of key, “a rabbit hole”, to memory. The concept of Alias in Wonderland allows the department of Digital Art (Head of Dept. Prof. Virgil Widrich) to present its versatility and the diversity of the works produced by its students in a compact show at one single venue. An alias was created for each “original”, the originals, however, are at some other place. -- read more --

Media Intervention
2009

Trash Rock Archives present:
'ONE POTATO, TWO POTATO'
Found Footage
Format: VHS
Length: 4'18
Production date: 1981/2009
Copyright: Al Bird Gore/ Trash Rock Productions

"We clearly distance ourselves from killing people for a video. We present this purely as a document of historical interest and a missing link from Austrian punk of the 1980s. This is the first time ONE POTATO, TWO POTATO has been shown anywhere." Al Bird Sputnik (Trash Rock Archives)" -- read on --

"Allure de Wonderland"
Interactive video installation,
2009

"Allure de Wonderland" is a computer generated optical illusion, which takes the form of a digitalised version of Alice’s adventures, “Through the Looking-Glass”.

Visitors automatically change the perspectives of the installation through their movements. The idea is to create an artificial space and to be able to see behind the door. In this manner, virtuality is combined with existent architecture. -- read more --

"v+"
Expanded Timecode Vinyl
2009

"v+" expands upon the time code records, which are employed in digital DJ systems, through the addition of visual aspects. The control signal read off the record is not only used to control sound, but also video, which is projected directly onto a record. This thus becomes the carrier of both virtual audio and video objects.

“Become a Member”
Radio play visualisation, short film
2009

A conversation from the radio play “Become a Member” (Josef Kleindienst) has been visualised. The focus of this visualisation is on the first few minutes of a dialogue, which deals with the inability to make contact and is answered by visual reduction. A 3D image of the Mariahilfer Strasse in Vienna was chosen as a shooting location, which as a shopping street with a large number of contact possibilities, offered a paradoxical setting for processes of anonymisation. -- read more --

"Run For Your Life"
Interactive video
2009

In a reference to old computer games, an NES game pad connected to a micro-controller is used to influence the sequential progression and speed of a video. The faster that the buttons are pressed, the slower and more comprehensible the playback becomes. The intention is to demonstrate the problematic nature of retaining a relationship to one’s own conscious existence and the complexity of influencing of one’s own environment. -- read on --

I am the Mockingbird
Performative installation
2009

Every sentence in the song "Green Grass" is a metaphor for death. For me, the tenor of the number is positive, as it defines death as a new beginning.

In the course of my research, my attention was quickly captured by mockingbirds, which do not have their own song, but copy (sample) those of other birds and mimic sounds from their environment. A mockingbird can have up to 200 melodies (clips) in its repertoire. -- read on --

“Compositions from the Microcosmos”
Sound installation
2009

Nature loves to create patterns and figures, which frequently have dimensions that we cannot measure. “Composition from the Microcosmos” attempts to locate e.coli bacteria within an acoustic range that can be perceived by humans. The movements of the microbes are sonificated by means of software support on the basis of a microscopic video image. -- read on --

"Alias-Alias Stele"
Column with video
2009

In the exhibition there is an “alias column” for the original from “Alias in Wonderland”. The original consists of a column, which opens upon contact and then closes. However, as this was sent to the ZKM in Karlsruhe for archiving prior to the exhibition, this now only contains the alias for the alias as evidence of the original work.

The viewer sees a reference to the archive where the original is located. -- read more --

"l-p-r-n-t-s-c-r-n"
Hybrid playing environment
2009

The content of l-p-r-n-t-s-c-r-n is based on play with movement and its representation within a limited playing environment. The dynamically changing light conditions within real space provide the graphic elements in a video game than can be mechanically influenced. Free space is transformed into a labyrinth, light into a two-dimensional environment, visitors and objects into exits and detours.

"Light Frequency Fingertips"
Performance/concert
2009

"Light Frequency Fingertips" consists of four finger attachments fitted with photo-transistors. Using the sensors secured to the index fingers and thumbs on both hands, it is possible to transform light frequencies into audio signals. Different makes of mobile phone displays serve as a sound source. Subtle finger movements transform the differing light frequencies of the displays into sounds of varying pitch and volume. -- read on --

"System H"
work series
2009

"System H" constitutes a series of works, which deals with the system of sound generation using wheels. The first work in this series is the SGSX-H 750, which consists of a Suzuki GSX-R 750 motorcycle engine and gearbox, the wheels from which are used to create sound. As is the case with a Hammond organ, a sound pick-up is located above each of the gearwheels. In this way, each gearwheel is employed with its original toothed form and number of teeth as a source of its characteristic sound. By means of an interface, consisting of a keyboard with a key for each of the gearwheels, these sounds can be played in instrument form. -- read on --

"synthiebike wien"
Citybike Sonification Toolchain
2009

The basic idea behind this project was to employ the data from the Vienna City Bike network for artistic analysis. Initially, a script was created in order to obtain the data from the network in prepared form and then experimentation followed.

The City Bike traffic flows were subjected to synthesis and approximation, and metadata was obtained. Visualisation, sonification and interactive games were then created using this data. Following a brief project pause, sonification was established as the project objective. -- read on --

“This is a string instrument”
Performance
2008/09

The pitch of a base string is altered by a lever, which employs a motor in order to apply tension and is influenced by an infrared distance sensor. The string is hit by a drill and myself.

The dream of a low-frequency, scraping, clicking and undulating pile of metal has been fulfilled!

"Electromagnetic Orchestra"
performative audio-installation
2009

What would happen if the string section in an orchestra were to be replaced by standard lamps? What would it sound like, if an entire orchestra were to no longer consist of instruments, but electrical goods? In the performative, audio-installation, "Electromagnetic Orchestra", the architecture of an orchestra is emulated by electrical equipment (monitors, vacuum cleaners and standard lamps). An integrated detector in the installation renders audible the electromagnetic waves emitted by the devices. -- read on --

"A MINUTE’S SILENCE"
Short film: 1 minute / 2009

What is silence and what does this term mean within our cultural framework? Moreover, what are the connotations of the word “silence”?

The film “A MINUTE’S SILENCE” was created using copy and paste. The combination of 392 images, which were accessed and prepared with the held of Google image search, represents an attempt to create a iconic periphrase of the term “silence” in digital form.

"WS2008/09"
miniDV 58min

A snapshot of the winter semester. The analytically rigid contours of repetitive performance accentuate the free interpretations within the individual cycles. Repeated self-reflection, the search for identity and personality, as well as the fear of, but willingness to accept, revelation are all apparent. -- read on --

"Stofftonband"
Performance, Installation, sound machine
2009

The work "Stofftonband" undertakes a search for the musical structures found in the textures and composition of fabrics. A sound machine renders audible the beats and sounds emanating from articles of clothing such as women’s underwear, men’s shirts, dresses, etc. Sound combinations that until now, were merely worn. The instrument consists of an object installation that can be played by two people. -- read on --

M.u.R.
Animation
2009

"M.u.R." is an excerpt from a short film, that is currently undergoing completion and which is concerned with the medial synchronisation of our society. The scene shows people on the “thought factory” conveyor belt. The question is, who will jump off the belt and pull out the plug? -- read on --

"spectromorphological architecture"
Installation
2009

The geometric figure of the tensioned lines from the project >digital claiming< in Plocica (Croatia) have been reconstructed in the form of curved stainless steel rods. Two of these lines are juxtaposed and thus create architectonic spaces. In addition, multi-channel loudspeakers are integrated into the composition, which thus disposes over three bodies comprised by the architectonic space formed between the lines, the tectonic body of the steel rods and the combined sound systems. -- read on --

Zeitformen
2009

With his "Zeitformen" project, Benjamin Weber deals with the visualisation of the temporal concept in the form of digital time travel. Using a digital time model, which rotates in space on four axes, time can move through various patterns and forms and also describe them. Relative to the acceleration of every individual dimension, time moves in continually changing temporal loops.  -- read on --

Clear Text
2009

The potential of images is based on the ambiguity of being on the one hand a picture of reality, and on the other hand a communication tool. In „Clear Text“ the images are sabotaged to give them a new meaning. The original message is modified by using infrared light which is not perceived by the human eye. The modification can be seen by using a mobile phone camera or other digital camera, by which the device becomes the receiver for the subversion. -- read on --

“DigitaleKunst2009”
Video/Performance
2009

This video is based on a one-hour performance, which emanated from reflections concerning the study process and learning per se, as well as events during the past academic year 2008/09. It is a critical, inquisitive and self-applied experiment on the theme of, “Does practice make perfect?” The work prompts the very questions upon which it is based. -- read on --
