Kathrin Stumreich - Stofftonband

[…] 2 material loops, each measuring 5 m in length, consist of a composition of differing textiles and move through space and along the object over a number of motor-driven rollers. Sound generation takes place via light sensors, which convert the uninterrupted light emerging from the fabrics into audio signals.

“Kathrin Stumreich's fashion background inspired the Fabric Machine, a loop-based instrument that runs fabric at controllable speeds through lasers that react to thread count, thickness and seams.” (Eliot Van Buskirk in: Wired Magazine)

The sound machine was part of the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition 2009 at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA, the Ausstellung  Zauberhafte Klangmaschinen exhibition in Hainburg, and will be shown at the Nickelsdorfer Konfrontationen in July 2009.
