Sommersemester 2010

Workshop "Living With Systems" - Time`s Up /Linz (visiting artists in spring term 2010 at the Digital Art Department/ University of Applied Arts Vienna ):

Abstract:

The aim of this workshop is to investigate, contemplate and implement systems with which one could, would or should live. The concentration is upon technically mediated and consciously constructed systems, machinic constructions that influence, direct, control, stabilise or destabilise, use, misuse, redirect and play with the daily processes of life and living.

Examples here might include Ken Rinaldo's Farm Fountain, the Algorithmic Psychogeography of Social Fiction or the survival systems of Open Sailing, weather representations or the behavioural control of Life Sign. Non-machinic systems such as the process behind "Supersize Me!" or intentional communities will remain outside the spectrum of this workshop, as will purely software based systems.

In the first part of the workshop we will spend two days investigating experiments with lived systems, from urban gardens through to worn technologies. The students will begin to sketch projects that are implementable and applicable. Directions of investigation, processes of research, documentation and reporting strategies will be looked into. The systems are lived with not only when complete but also in their process of creation.

The second part of the workshop will be held at the Time's Up Workshops in Linz, where access to machines for the fabrication of pieces exists. In the three days in Linz, the parts of the systems that need mechanical support should be completed and a form of prototype should be finished. Documentation and communication of the pieces will be important here. There will be a presentation of the pieces in their partially completed states to an interested public at the end of the third day. The students should be able to communicate not only the intended structure of the pieces but also the surprises found in the implementation process, the serendipities and the impossibilities.

The third part of the workshop will be two days in Vienna where a finalisation of the pieces will be undertaken using the laboratory at the University of Applied Arts Vienna/ Department of Digital Art. A presentation will be made on the final day.

_____

Time's Up is a group of practitioners and theorists with artistic, scientific and technical backgrounds based in the harbour of Linz/Austria. The work of Time's Up follows a so-called proto-scientific approach. Objects and situations produced by Time's Up are not exhibits of art, but rather publicly accessible experiments. Time's Up's main focus of investigation and research lies in full body human-machine interfaces, aspects of human perception and cognition, immersive mixed reality techniques and the machine madness of our time.

Time's Up has shown their work in various international Festivals in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Hongkong, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Vietnam.
