ALEXANDRE BURTON (sound artist, Canada)

APPARATUSES AND PHENOMENA – the good old new media

credit alexandre burton /

The invention of software-hardware apparatuses is central to Alexandre Burton’s artistic process, which he definess as lutherie numérique, where designing an instrument is the equivalent of designing the potential territory of future works. His production often combines physical (energy) phenomema with audiovisual digital sampling processes. His works are conceived with some level of open-endedness to let the phenonema draw their own maps, sometimes under the watch of the performer.

Alexandre Burton's interest for new media stems from a desire to reveal new forms of expressivity through technological processes. His practice conveys an essential concern for the relationships created between audio, visual and somatic phenomenon. His works are regularly presented at international digital art and music festivals. In addition to his activities as part of artificiel, he collaborates with other artistic and cultural bodies as an generative sound and visual designer.
