Chongquing is a loud city - music, advertising announcements and blaring traffic mingle in a soundscape that reaches an average of 100 dB. Chaos and a hectic hustle and bustle determine daily routine. The city streets bubble like a Chinese hot pot, a traditional dish served simmering.
Loud crashing and banging symbolizes the search for happiness, the power of thunder is an expression of the emergence of life. Chongquing´s citizens face this ear-splitting noise with ambivalence: does it signify security and hope or uncertainty and fear?
Recordings of the streets of Chongqing comprise the sound carpet of this exhibition, causing the remains of lighted fire-crackers to vibrate.
